Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in DC & Virginia

Laser light therapy (LLLT) is a revolutionary option in Hair Restoration for men and women suffering from the effects of hair loss. Lasers have long been used in medicine and surgery to re-surface the skin, but a new generation of lasers that are cool, that is non-thermal and non-heat generating, are now being used to combat hair loss. With laser light therapy for preventative hair care you can achieve thicker, fuller, shinier and healthier looking hair. Laser light therapy for hair uses a device that contains up to 120 therapeutic low level laser lights which deliver light energy directly to the scalp. This phototherapy can increase the blood supply to the scalp by 50% after one treatment. It also directly stimulates cell division and growth within the hair follicles and stops the progression of hair loss in 87-100% of patients. The phototherapy in the form of LLLT also results in increased tensile hair strength and elasticity with fuller, shinier, softer and thicker hair.

LLLT was developed in Europe for improving hair volume and hair shaft quality. Patients being treated for hair loss sit comfortably under the laser as it gently delivers phototherapy to the scalp. The visible red light from the lasers travels about 8mm into the tissue with no harm to skin and scalp. The light energy is absorbed by the cells and initiates cellular repair and division. Cell function is improved and hair loss is slowed, even stopped.

LLLT may increase blood flow to the treated areas as well. European studies show that LLLT stops the progression of hair loss in at least 87% of patients; it stimulates new hair growth in 30-50% of cases. An FDA study involving men and women showed that 87% of men and 100% of women using regular LLLT for six months stopped the progression of their hair loss.

Our Process

At our low level laser light therapy clinic in Virginia, Dr. Giannotto uses LLLT for post-operative care of the transplant patients. Post-op LLLT, twice a week for eight weeks, accelerates healing and growth of the new follicles. It has a bacteriostatic effect on the scalp and many patients have stated that their hair looks and feels thicker, fuller and healthier and have noticed new hair growth.

LLLT can be designed as an in clinic or at home program. In both programs, we measure the patient’s hair density via computer and adjust the laser dose so that density progresses over time. Patients using an in-home laser program with the portable iGrow laser helmet also come to the clinic for measurements of density at appropriate times.

Patients with early stages of hair loss are excellent candidates for LLLT. The progression of their hair loss can be slowed, even stopped to the point where surgery will not become necessary. Women who are thinning diffusely are also good candidates.

Once the progression of hair loss is stopped and new growth and thickening occurs, they become better candidates for surgical Hair Restoration.

Results are usually apparent in 6 weeks with a slowing down of the progression of hair loss. Density measurements stabilize at this time and by 12-16 weeks start to increase as patients begin to notice new hair growth and a thicker appearance to their hair.

LLLT is safe and meets all international safety standards and legislative specifications of a “non-significant risk” product. LLLT is non-thermal and does not change or alter molecular structures.

Remember, you do NOT have to accept hair loss!
