Which Type of Surgical Hair Replacement Therapy Is Right for You?

The Giannotto Clinic employs two methods of hair implant surgery in the DC area. Both methods use existing hair follicles so the new hair that grows is your own. Whether your hair loss is the result of genetic or hormonal etiologies, Dr. Giannotto can help.

FUT procedure

Follicular Unit Transplantation

In Follicular Unit Transplantation — also called FUT — Dr. Giannotto removes a strip of active hair follicles from the scalp. Next, Dr. Giannotto dissects the active follicles from the strip using a high-powered microscope, and then transplants them into the balding or thinning area. FUT permits the transplantation of up to 3,500 grafts in a single session, and the results are permanent. Recovery time varies upon the individual, but generally lasts no more than three to five days.

FUE surgical procedure

Follicular Unit Extraction

The second — and preferred — method of hair transplantation is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) NeoGraft is the most advanced and effective hair transplantation procedure available. In FUE NeoGraft, Dr. Giannotto uses automated robotic technology to remove the follicular units directly from the scalp, eliminating the need to remove a strip of skin and bypassing the dissection step altogether. The robotic device leaves a tiny puncture wound that heals within several hours. After removing the follicle, the robot then implants the hair-bearing follicle into a balding or thinning area using a very fine needle. Dr. Giannotto utilizes three unique approaches to the FUE procedure: ARTAS, NeoGraft, and SmartGraft. Like FUT, the FUE NeoGraft results are permanent. Because FUE NeoGraft is less invasive than FUT, healing times average about only one to two days.

ARTAS Robotic Procedure

artas robotic procedureThe ARTAS Robotic Procedure is a minimally invasive hair transplantation solution that leverages digital imaging and precision robotics to harvest healthy grafts for transplantation. Unlike the earlier methods of hair transplantation, there is no need for the surgical removal of a strip of scalp from the back and sides of the head, no linear scar left after your procedure and no need for stitches or staples to close the wound. The benefit is a quick recovery time and the ability to return to normal activities and work sooner.

The ARTAS Robotic Procedure provides extremely natural looking results. After the procedure, you are able to wear your hair any length or style with confidence.

Non-Surgical Solutions for Early Hair Loss

For clients who are just beginning to lose hair, Low Level Laser light Therapy is an exciting new possibility and Dr. Giannotto sometimes uses LLLT in conjunction with surgery for the best possible results. Although LLLT is not a substitute for surgery in those with significant hair loss, this non-thermal process can result in thicker, shinier hair. LLLT increases the supply of blood to the scalp and directly stimulates growth within the hair follicles. Success rates are astonishing, ranging from 87 to 100 percent of clients in this revolutionary new hair replacement therapy. LLLT does not harm the skin and requires no downtime; clients observe improvement beginning at six weeks following therapy.

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is a new therapy for people with thinning hair and those that have androgenetic alopecia. The procedure involves drawing the patient’s blood and centrifuging it so that the plasma with the platelets, which are rich in growth factors, is isolated and collected. This PLATELET RICH PLASMA is very useful in tissue regeneration and healing. It is injected on the thinning areas of the scalp after performing a dermaroller treatment to these areas.

Our recommended PRP program consists of 4 treatments over 12 months. During that time, the patient will be given 24 Low Level laser Light Therapy sessions to further stimulate growth and stop the progression of hair loss.

After 3 months, patients will start to notice some hair. The treatment not only promotes hair growth but also strengthens the hair follicles. It is safe and has no side effects.

Although PRP treatments yield great results for people suffering from hair loss, it is not for everyone. This treatment is not indicated in frank balding areas but has its greatest effects in patients who are thinning and want to stop the progression of their hair loss.

PRP is also used in conjunction with Hair Restoration Surgical Procedures to promote rapid healing and add growth factors to the implanted grafts.

Several studies have shown the benefits of PRP in Alopecia Aereata.
